I’m Trying… January 31st, 2008

I’ve been *wanting* to blog during the whole evening. However, every time I came to my site or looked at the dashboard/new post page, I faced a blank. Not just a physical blank (i.e. the empty textarea), but a mental blank. I have nothing to blog about. Yet here I am. La la la. I must eventually share with you the joy of one of my numerous drafts…if I can ever get around to finishing one.
I guess this is one of the downsides of having an uneventful life.
I guess I do have one tiny idea: what should I blog about? There, discuss the question.
2008 Movie Watching Challenge January 29th, 2008

This is a personal challenge of mine. You can challenge yourself to whatever you want too.
I am a member of Listal. There are currently 443 movies on my “Want to watch” list, and I keep adding new ones. However, the list of movies I did watch doesn’t seem to increase very fast. I have decided to put an end to this terrible fact.
The “Rules”
Very simply: before every new month, make a list of movies I must watch. Any number, it doesn’t matter. The list can be very short, again, it doesn’t matter. My goal is to actually watch more movies than the ones listed (I must watch the list, of course). All movies must come from my Listal list in order to count as part of the challenge.
Late January / February Movies List
The main list:
- Conan the Barbarian by John Milius
Cutie Honey by Hideaki Anno—Watched January 29thThe Dark Crystal by Jim Henson and Frank Oz—Watched February 10th- Enchanted by Kevin Lima
- Finding Neverland by Marc Forster
- The General by Clyde Bruckman and Buster Keaton
- Porco Rosso by Hayao Miyazaki
- The Terminator by James Cameron
- The Terminator 2: Judgment Day by James Cameron
A few additions. I put them in a separate list because they are short movies and therefore don’t take as much “engagement” on my part.
- The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Clyde Geronimi and Jack Kinne
- The Vagabond by Charlie Chaplin
BellaBuffs: Uploading Buttons Safely January 28th, 2008

If you are a user of BellaBuffs, you probably noticed the warning on the buttons upload page, saying that setting a folder’s permission to 777 can be very risky. I will not contradict that statement, for the simple reason that it is entirely true.
Of course, adding buttons through the script is fun and easy. You just need to click a few times to add a button magically (and lazily ;)). So, how can you do it without putting your website (and your entire server) at risk? It’s actually quite easy, but it will require you to log in to FTP, although this is not how you will upload your files. Note that this “tutorial” requires you to know how to change a folder’s permission (CHMOD).
First, you will need to log in to your FTP account and set the folder’s permission to 777. Don’t worry just yet! Don’t shut down the window or sign out yet, you’ll do this last.
Then, sign in to your administration panel and simply proceed to adding new buttons.
Finally, set the folder’s permission back to 755 and sign out from everything you need to sign out of. The images will still be visible on your fanlisting and your folder will not be putting you at risk!
Nice, huh? You don’t need to credit me for that useful piece of information. Just enjoy your new safety points.
There’s even more to it. There are many other scripts out there that claim to need permissions to be set to 777. Actually, if all you do is something like uploading images, you only need to change the permission while you are using this feature, and can set it back to a safer number when you’re done.
Great Minds Think Alike January 28th, 2008

Yesterday morning, as on every morning, I woke up far too early and, well, I thought. I do that sort of thing quite a lot (thinking, that is). I didn’t have any particular worry, so I let my mind wander. It found its way to a few years ago, when my mother was addicted to a computer game. Yes, my mother! The one whom I’m not even sure ever game the Super Mario Bros games a try. Alright, maybe ONCE, but that was under the pressure of her five children.
Anyway, the game was similar to Tetris and I tried remembering its name, quite certain that it was simply “Boxes”. Turns out it is indeed the name.
Anyway, yesterday evening I come onto the computer and see that my sister spoke to me. She had asked the name of the game! We are just too awesome, we have to be connected on some super-mega-upper level.
Neglecting Writer January 26th, 2008

I’ve been a neglecting writer since the holidays, but my dreams keep reminding me of my creative side. I make dreams that inspire new stories. However, I know it is no use to start twenty novels at a time. I can write down the idea, but I must delay the actual writing until I have something completed, else I won’t finish anything before some forty years.
I’m suffering from pain in the upper back (on the right side only) since last Thursday. I felt it starting during my group therapy and developing during the evening. I’m not sure what has caused it, but I’ve tried having better control of which position I stand and lie in, and it feels a bit less worse than yesterday…for the back only. My neck is rather tense this morning. I guess it would help if I had a “normal” sleeping schedule.
